Drawer interiors are not part of a move-out clean and need an add-on, as do oven, fridge and cabinet interiors. Empty anything you book.
Plan building access
Share the gate, buzzer, lockbox or key handoff, any building access hours, and where the cleaner can park.
Moving out of a Santa Monica rental
Santa Monica has a large rental market: the city's Rent Control Board counted 27,589 controlled rental units at the end of 2025. If you are moving out of a rental, California Civil Code 1950.5 limits cleaning deductions from a security deposit to what is needed to return the unit to the level of cleanliness it had when the tenancy began.
Under the same law, you can ask your landlord for an initial inspection no earlier than two weeks before you move out. It gives you a chance to fix the listed problems before the final inspection. Booking the clean after that inspection, and before you return the keys, lets you include anything it noted.
Since April 1, 2025, California landlords who deduct for cleaning or repairs must photograph the unit after you return it and again after that work is done, and send the photos with the itemized statement. Taking your own dated photos once the cleaner finishes gives you a record too.
The clean needs an empty home: furniture, boxes and belongings out, closets empty, and water and electricity on. If items are still in place, the service defaults to a deep clean. Parts of Santa Monica are preferential parking zones, so tell Ascend where the cleaner can park and how to get into the building.

- Remove furniture, boxes, personal belongings and loose rubbish. Empty closets.
- Make sure water and electricity are on.
- Share building entry, buzzer or lockbox details and where the cleaner can park.
- If you booked oven, fridge, cabinet or drawer interiors, empty them first.
If furniture or belongings are present, the service will default to a Deep Cleaning instead. Drawer interiors are not included in move-out cleaning and must be added on separately.
